Description
Active learning is an approach to engaging students in the teaching and learning process that has been supported in the literature across disciplines and in a variety of instructional contexts. It has been clearly established that student achievement and experience can benefit significantly from successful engagement in active learning. What is also clear is that design/planning and implementation practices can heavily influence the impact of active learning engagements on desired student outcomes. In this workshop, participants will explore literature focused on approaches to active learning planning and implementation, as well as explanation practices that connect to teaching with transparency

Participants are encouraged to register for all six workshops or choose to register solely for the workshops that align with their needs. Workshop dates are as follows:

September 6th: An Introduction to Evidence-Based Active Learning

September 28th: Deep Dive into Active Learning Implementation Practice

October 11th: Evidence-Based Active Learning: Peer Instruction

October 26th: Evidence-Based Active Learning: Minute Paper

November 8th: Evidence-Based Active Learning: Jigsaw

November 30th: Evidence-Based Active Learning: Gallery Walk

After this workshop participants will be able to:

  • plan implementation of new, evidence-based active learning strategies
  • foster student buy-in through infusion of explanation and facilitation strategies
  • design active learning experiences that foster student motivation, confidence, and sense of belonging
