Interrogating the Etic Perspective in the “New” Focus on Race: What’s a Researcher to Do?
As we more understand an amplification of research on race in education, White researchers are designing research studies centering race. I will address what this moment and movement could mean in building knowledge to inform practice in education and how researchers can deepen their capacity to study Black and other communities of color.
The purpose of the series put on by The Ohio State University is to engage Ohio State alums and general audiences in thinking about and reflecting on what it means to conduct educational research from a standpoint that honors Black lives in the research process, while also disrupting racism and white supremacy. Given the unprecedented moment we are all experiencing in our lifetime we are committed to shifting the landscape of qualitative research and using this research to shift our sociopolitical context toward racial equity and justice. Each Ohio State alum will engage in a discussion with Dr. Lori Patton Davis, Professor and Department Chair of Educational Studies, and Dr. Penny A. Pasque, Professor and Director of QualLab. This effort also aligns with the college’s Racial Equity and Justice Initiative led by Dean Don Pope-Davis.
