FALCoN with Tessa Andrews. Using active learning (even in large classes): What teaching expertise do you need?

Description
Active-learning strategies are often implemented ineffectively, and therefore do not reach their full potential for supporting student success. One critical component of effective evidence-based teaching in undergraduate STEM education is foundational teaching knowledge. This short presentation and facilitated discussion will introduce three types of teaching knowledge and how this knowledge is used by instructors. Participants will be guided to reflect on and discuss their own learning and teaching, to recognize their foundational teaching knowledge, and to generate ideas for taking their teaching knowledge to the next level.

Sit down with other engaged colleagues on Zoom. Based on research by the Summer Institutes, supports are three times more important than barriers in implementing Scientific Teaching in classrooms. Join us for support with the National Institute on Scientific Teaching, formerly the Summer Institutes (Bathgate et al., 2019a, 2019b).
