Election week. Tensions run high. We all work with students and faculty who are face inequities with more open eyes, deal with the emotional trauma of isolation, are affected by immediate health or economic concerns, or are becoming disassociated from friends and family because of deep political malaise. Have you any strategies to tackle the onslaught of 2020 traumas? In this historically challenging time, the concrete teaching strategies of trauma informed K-12 classrooms have something to offer higher ed. This presentation will discuss the relevant history and definitions of trauma-informed pedagogy, the brain science behind its creation, and the particular vulnerabilities of the young adult populations we serve. We will then invite discussion about how to meaningfully translate these practices into the context of post secondary education right now, in the interests of better supporting students, faculty and our larger campus communities.
