Description
Set in the learning community framework we will embark on a shared journey to explore how mindfulness can be used by biology instructors both themselves and in the classroom. There is a wealth of literature on the benefits and uses of contemplative or mindful practices in higher education but not much about incorporating them specifically into the biology education context. Together we will learn about mindful practice and pedagogy while developing and working on a project to figure out how to successfully integrate those practices either ourselves as biology instructors or in our classrooms. Last semester we developed a resource page on Mindfulness in the Biology Classroom which can be found in the Resources Module on Carmen.
In preparation for our first meeting:
In preparation for our first meeting:
- read Chapter 1: Transformation and Renewal in Higher Education from Contemplative Practices in Higher Education.
- check out the resource that this group produced last semester - Mindfulness for Biology Educators. This can be found in the Bio5001 Carmen page, in the Modules section, at the bottom under Resources.
At our first meeting:
- I will lead a grounding and breath following meditation.
- We will talk about the structure and discuss the goals of the learning community.
- Discuss the assigned chapter.
- Talk about potential project ideas.
We will meet 6 times over the term (Wednesdays 2/3, 2/17, 3/3, 3/17, 4/7, 4/21) from 4:00-5:30pm. During these meetings we will do a mindfulness practice (led by Erica), build community, and work on a mutually agreed upon project. This will count for 14 Bio5001 points. RSVP here if you plan to attend.
