Description
Course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs) offer an effective mechanism to engage large numbers of students in relevant scientific practices. As the number of CUREs continues to grow nationwide, it has increasingly fallen to teaching assistants (TAs) to facilitate these curricula. Yet, TAs may be underprepared to assume the role of facilitator and may encounter unique barriers when teaching CUREs. For these reasons, providing CURE TAs with professional development (PD) opportunities designed explicitly to equip and empower them to be successful CURE instructors is essential. In this interactive session, I will describe the collaborative work that our lab has engaged in to advocate for CURE TA PD as well as efforts to design, implement, and evaluate PD for TAs facilitating biology and (bio)chemistry CUREs at an R1, Hispanic-Serving Institution.
