Motivation and engagement are key influencers of academic performance and success in traditional and digital learning environments. Online learning can present unique challenges, however, due to the physical isolation between students and teachers. Students’ motivation often suffers, and their engagement declines as a result of this isolation. Join Kui Xie, Cyphert Distinguished Professor and director of The Research Laboratory for Digital Learning in the College of Education and Human Ecology, as he shares the concepts of learner engagement in digital learning environments and explores the interplay between motivation, engagement and performance. Dr. Xie will propose design considerations to support students’ experience in digital learning, which also have implications to traditional classrooms. Following Xie’s presentation, attendees will collaborate in a brainstorm session to identify concrete ways to apply the design considerations to a teaching strategy or lesson to better support students’ learning. In addition, participants are invited to attend a subsequent workshop devoted to implementing the design changes with the assistance of educational technologists and designers across the university.
