Description
Pressing societal issues like human health, resource sustainability, and environmental change require a diverse workforce trained to solve complex, real-world problems. Engaging students in real research, design, and/or problem-solving as undergraduates can help them transition from just following instructions and memorizing concepts to being co-creators of new knowledge. Highlighting work from a decade of the NSF-funded SIRIUS Project (Sustainable Interdisciplinary Research to Inspire Undergraduate Success), this presentation will introduce what we call course-based Authentic Learning Experiences (cALEs)--experiences in which students use the same processes professionals employ in the field to solve real-world problems with unknown outcomes (including Project-Based Learning (PBL) and Course-based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CUREs)).
