Description
We may often wonder whether students will engage with learning activities that do not have any marks associated. “Incentivised engagement” includes providing incentives for students to engage with certain activities. While these incentives are often marks, other incentives can be provided, such as ‘badges’ in a gamification of learning context, for example. In this talk, we look at the impact of incentivised engagement in terms of both student engagement and student performance. Perusall (https://perusall.com/) is a social annotation platform designed to increase student engagement with pre-class reading. It measures student interaction with the text and annotations and calculates scores, which may or may not contribute to a subject’s assessment. In this study, Perusall was used in a second-year undergraduate Statistics for Engineering module whereby students completed the weekly reading activity via the Perusall platform. Students’ Perusall engagement did not count towards their overall marks during the first half of the semester, whereas in the second half of the semester it did. The estimated effects of incentivised Perusall engagement, in terms of both student engagement and student performance, will be presented, followed by a discussion of the results. While incentivised Perusall engagement did have an impact on both learning and engagement, we found that the effects were dependent on the student group.
