Description
Evidence demonstrates that student academic belonging and growth mindset in the classroom contribute to increased academic performance and overall well-being. Faculty and instructors can play a critical role in contributing to these elements in the classroom through course materials and pedagogical style. In this workshop, we will discuss key concepts and teaching strategies, and participants will leave with an introductory plan for implementing concepts from the workshop into their teaching. Participants of this workshop are encouraged to register for the follow-up to this workshop, “Promoting Student Engagement through Teaching Strategies that Impact Student Academic Belonging and Growth Culture”.
After attending the workshop, participants will be able to:
- describe the impact of student academic belonging and growth culture on student academic achievement and students’ overall sense of belonging
- define student academic belonging and growth culture
- describe intentional design strategies that can utilize the syllabus as a tool to contribute to student sense of belonging and growth culture
- identify effective teaching practices to support student academic belonging and growth culture in and outside of the classroom
