Description
Reducing implicit bias and promoting diversity in STEM is a science and innovation, workforce, and economic imperative (OSTP & OPM, 2016). While the first three sessions of this CIRTLCast series laid the foundation for understanding implicit bias in STEM higher education, in this final session, we will discuss recommendations for interrupting and mitigating implicit bias. Recommendations will include concrete tips and strategies for future STEM faculty in all disciplines, levels, and roles within STEM. We will define and discuss key terms, such as intersectionality, positionality, and cultural responsiveness. Using Blackboard Collaborate, presenters will facilitate a discussion between speakers and participants based on their questions, comments, and experiences related to this issue.
Guiding questions for this session include:
• As a member of a minority or majority group, how does your identity and demographic reality impact how you address implicit bias? In what ways does intersectionality play a role in your approach to implicit bias?
• For STEM instructors, what are some strategies specific to addressing “hot moments” (i.e., controversial, conflictual, and/or emotionally-charged dialogues) in the classroom?
• In your experience, what key concepts, resources, strategies, or practices were most helpful for interrupting implicit bias? Were there any strategies omitted from this series that you would like to share?
