Description
LEARNING GOALS After this session, participants will be able to: ** Identify the learning skills students need to know in order to excel in a course (parallel to its content). ** Design activities to teach students how to use those skills to learn course content most effectively. ** Tailor metacognitive support activities to online courses. ** Use online systems to provide support for any kind of course. It's easy to forget what you used to not know, and difficult to remember how you learned to do the things you do without thinking. Not every student arrives at Ohio State knowing how to learn efficiently and effectively—the basic behavioral and cognitive activities that turn the time spent on task into productive learning. Taking time to provide clear, practical guidance about the steps students need to take to succeed in your discipline can mean the difference between a vicious cycle of failure and a virtuous reward loop. In this webinar, you'll learn how Dr. Matthew Stoltzfus of the Department of Chemistry leverages online systems to provide basic metacognitive support to students in his Introduction to Chemistry courses. Dr. Stoltzfus has developed a set of research-driven activities that exploit a flexible combination of online and in-person activities, and that have reliably improved learning and performance for early Ohio State students. He will describe some of the work he has done and provide suggestions for implementing similar support in your own courses. Presented by the Distance Education Learning and Teaching Academy (DELTA).
