Description
Are you interested in learning about evidence-based teaching strategies and activities that you can incorporate into your courses, often within minimal preparation or grading? In Small Teaching: Everyday Lessons from the Science of Learning, James Lang outlines research on strategies that support increased learning and provides activities that instructors can use to in their courses that are based on this research. Rather than requiring a complete course overhaul, many of these strategies can be incorporated with only minimal change in course design and teaching practice.

The Drake Institute for Teaching and Learning is partnering with Institute Affiliate Jane Hammons of University Libraries to facilitate a book discussion workshop series for those interested in reading and discussing Small Teaching. Participants will be encouraged to read the corresponding chapters in advance of the workshop, reflect on discussion questions, and attend and engage in the synchronous workshop via Zoom.

Participants are encouraged to register for all four workshops or choose to register solely for the workshops that align with their needs. Workshop dates and book chapters covered are as follows:

   February 7th: Chapter 1 - Retrieving, Chapter 2 - Predicting

   February 14th : Chapter 3 - Interleaving, Chapter 4 - Connecting

   February 21st: Chapter 5 - Practicing, Chapter 6 – Self-Explaining

   February 28th: Chapter 7 - Motivating, Chapter 8 - Growing, Chapter 9 - Expanding

An electronic copy of the book can be assessed here: https://library.ohio-state.edu/record=b8294132~S7 (link is external) (then click on "Connect to Resource EBSCOhost)

After this workshop participants will be able to:

  • Identify evidence-based strategies that support increased student learning.
  • Revise a course session or activity to incorporate a new activity based on a small teaching strategy.
You may register here (link is external).
