Description
This training session seeks to address a need for language awareness skills for members of a university community specifically, and society generally. It is easy to accidentally say something that marginalizes a person or population without being aware of the negative effects. When it comes to what we say, impact is more important than intent. In other words, we may not intend to be offensive when using a word or phrase, but a person may be harmed nonetheless. As members of the university community, we must also be empowered to take action when problematic language is used around us by those who may not be as well informed about the negative effects of non-inclusive language. This session will illustrate the importance of committing to being an active bystander in moments when bias emerges through microaggressions, as well as provide participants with actionable skills to do so. These skills are tailored to create educational conversations in response to biased comments/actions, rather than eliciting a defensive reaction from the person who has (perhaps unintentionally) caused harm. Participants in this session will thus learn how to effectively communicate in challenging situations through the employment of strategies that can be tailored to the particular situation at hand. Target audience: graduate students, postdocs, staff and faculty. This event is sponsored by The College of Arts and Sciences, The College of Engineering, and The College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences.
