Description
Each year we  focus on giving the students an opportunity to present their work to and talk with scientists. As an instructor, we hope that this activity will help you (a) consider how to mentor and ask questions to give student presenters a more authentic research experience, (b) see projects conducted by introductory biology students that vary from the traditional lab format, (c) reflect on how this research project and poster presentation achieves national recommendations for biology education.

This semester students will present posters on their  Endophytes project (1114H), Animal Behavior Project (1114), SEA PHAGES Project, and Spice Lab Projects. In the Endophytes project, students conduct independent research projects on fungal endophytes isolated from plants. In the Animal Behavior project, students conduct independent research projects on animal behaviors from various species including (but not exclusively) fiddler crabs, field green crickets, cherry shrimps, and American cockroaches.  SEA Phages students will present the annotated sequenced genome from a phage isolated the previous semester.  In the Spice Lab Project, students quantitatively assess the ability of different spices to inhibit the growth of bacteria.

You will interact with a total of 4 presenters

Poster Session Information:

When: Tuesday April 23rd  from 1-2:30pm

Where: Outside of Jennings Hall 001

How this will work:

  • At the start of the poster session, look for Luba Cubonova and Amy Kulesza to pick up materials.
  • Develop at least two questions that you can ask presenters that mimics questions they might receive at a real research conference. Ideally this would be something that asks students to apply, analyze, or synthesize their work within a broader scientific context. These can be developed beforehand or on the fly while talking to presenters. There is space on the handout you will pick up  for you to jot down question ideas.
  • Interact with at least 4 presenters/posters. You should aim to spend at least 10 minutes at each poster. Have fun with it and be encouraging where possible!
  • Please put a sticker on the poster number so that other instructors will know not to re-question the same presenter. If all of the posters have one sticker on them, feel free to talk to a presenter that has been questioned previously.
  •  Once you are done, hand any excess materials to Amy Kulesza.
  • Complete the required reflection (prompts on back side of your handout) and submit reflection to the CLSE Poster Session Reflection Assignment on Carmen.

RSVP if you plan to attend so we can get an idea of how many instructors will be in attendance.
