Description
The College of Arts and Sciences Office of Distance Education will host a Teaching Forum to discuss the effective use of active learning instructional strategies in online and hybrid courses. Active learning is an approach to instruction that involves actively engaging students with the course material through discussions, problem solving, case studies, role plays and other methods. Active learning approaches place a greater degree of responsibility on the learner than passive approaches.

A panel of faculty, associated faculty and an instructional design specialist from the College of Arts and Sciences will each share their experiences deploying active learning strategies in online and hybrid learning spaces and suggestions for adapting active learning strategies that serve the instructional goals and contexts of your class.

Anticipated Outcomes – By the end of the session, participants will be able to…

  • Understand the varied learning activities included under the “active learning” umbrella
  • Appreciate how active learning strategies can increase student engagement, timely assess understanding of complex concepts, prepare students for major exams and major assignments
  • Identify opportunities to add active learning activities to your online and hybrid courses
  • Explore tools, such as Top Hat, that can support active learning instructional approaches
Panelists:

Jessica Henderson (ASC Office of Distance Education)
Kristen Smock (Center for Life Sciences Education)
Anna Yocom (Department of Psychology)
Guiliano Migliori (Department of French and Italian)
