Description
Contemplative pedagogies involve teaching methods designed to cultivate deepened awareness, concentration, and insight. Research suggests that contemplative pedagogy improves every student's capacity to meet learning outcomes; that is, creates a more inclusive and equitable classroom space. Contemplative practices create cognitive space for considering new and challenging viewpoints, reduce test-taking anxiety and stress, improves creativity and problem-solving, and build empathy and community amongst students in the classroom.

In this workshop, participants will explore several methods to implement contemplative pedagogical practices in their classroom to increase inclusivity and equity, including mindfulness and writing exercises, paying special attention to how these practices and exercises are beneficial to minoritized students, as research shows they are beneficial to creating inclusive spaces and supporting the learning of underserved student populations.

After this workshop participants will be able to:

  • Articulate the benefits of contemplative pedagogy.
  • Plan and implement several contemplative exercises in their courses.
  • Reflect on the importance of how and why contemplative exercises are used.
