March 25: Beth Lazazzera has served as Chair for the Life Sciences Core Education Department at UCLA since 2019. The Life Sciences Core Education courses is the result of a cooperative effort by faculty, staff, and students from six life science departments to provide a uniform and integrated set of courses during the first years as an undergraduate. The Life Science Core courses are three Biology courses and three Life Science Math courses that involve computational biology and biostatistics. Beth is an Associate Professor of the Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics, where she previously served as the Vice Chair for undergraduate education. Beth’s lab studies bacterial behavior, including the formation of biofilms, and how errors in translation impact these behavior. Beth has extensive experience in curriculum development, teaching pedagogy, and administration. She has participated in numerous instructional activities at UCLA and has been proactive in applying new pedagogical strategies to improve the education experience of her students. She has been participating in workshops offered by the Center for Education Innovation and Learning in the Sciences (CEILS) and was a Scientific Teaching Fellow at the Mobile Summer Institute at UCLA.
