This course is intended for contract instructors interested in working on their instructional redesign. It is expected to take 2-6 hours per week. Final point will be determined based on how much time was spent on the course.
The Institute for Teaching and Learning’s new, asynchronous IR-on-Demand Short Course initiative provides instructors with access to local, national, and international subject matter experts who share experience in implementing active learning across a variety of disciplines. In this IR-on-Demand short course offering, Benjamin Wiggins, PhD, from the University of Washington focuses on the use of active learning in large lecture settings. Wiggins has extensive experience both practicing and researching active learning and provides guidance and information on planning and implementing 12 specific strategies in this course. Following the course, participants will be fully prepared to further engage students in the learning process.

The course may be completed asynchronously and at participant’s own pace, with no set deadline for completion. Participants should expect approximately two to six hours of work involved in each of the four steps of the course. Optional discussion board-based opportunities to engage with other participants and receive peer feedback are available.
After this workshop participants will be able to:
- Identify and address significant barriers to learning and other instructional problems or challenges.
- Improve instruction through effective implementation of active learning strategies.
- Evaluate the impact and/or effectiveness of instructional practices employed.
