** Dave has 3 copies of the book, 4 copies of the book are available at the BioSci Library, or you can access the eBook here: https://library.ohio-state.edu/record=b8362711~S7
** We expect that you will attend all 4 meetings of the group (2/3, 2/10, 2/18, 2/25) and come prepared to discuss the assigned chapters. You will receive 8 points for coming to the 4 meetings.
All are welcome to register for our first book group offering for the term. The book we are reading/discussing is Ken Bain’s What the Best College Teachers Do (2004). This is really an easy and enjoyable read that describes a qualitative study involving more than 50 instructors at institutions across the United States. The first session will be held next Monday, February 3rd at 9:00 AM (Jennings 251). Prior to the session, participants should acquire a copy of the book (either from Dr. Sovic or BPL) and read Chapter 1 entitled, Defining the Best (pages 1 – 21). This session will be carefully designed to meet the following outcomes:
Following the session, participants will have or be able to…
** …identify personal goals for the group experience.
** …describe the general approach used in the study that is described in the introductory chapter.
** …discuss elements of each of the six major conclusions from the book.
** …begin reflecting on their performance as an instructor in the context of what the book describes as, “what the best college teachers do.”
** …relate ideas presented in the book to the most current evidence-based approaches to instruction.
*Please use the outcomes stated above to guide your focus and reflections on the reading in preparation for session 1.
Subsequent sessions will focus on the following book sections:
Session 2 – Chapters 2 and 3 (What Do They Know about How We Learn? & How Do They Prepare to Teach); pages 22 – 67.
Session 3 – Chapters 4 and 5 (What Do They Expect of Their Students? & How Do They Conduct Class?); pages 68 – 134.
Session 4 – Chapters 6 and 7 (How Do They Treat Their Students? & How Do They Evaluate Their Students and Themselves?); pages 135 – 172.
If you cannot make it to one meeting, email Dave Sovic.2 to discuss participation options.
