Description
Join Greg Cowther & Benjamin Wiggins this Friday, April 25th, for a conversation about "Applying the 'Warm Demander' Persona to Preparation and Delivery of Exams."
The “warm demander” is an educational exemplar in which the instructor has high (demanding) expectations while supporting students strongly (warmly) as they strive to meet those expectations. In this session, we will lead a conversation on whether and how faculty, often perceived by students as “cold demanders” in the deployment of exams, can improve both the perceived and actual temperatures of exam-driven courses. Our context for this conversation will include Dr. Lisa Delpit’s five rules of academic power, recent data on faculty exam practices for undergraduate anatomy & physiology, and the new NSF-funded Exam Preview Project (https://faculty.washington.edu/crowther/Preview/). Participants will (A) identify exam reforms that could increase exam transparency without ignoring personal, departmental, and institutional constraints and (B) discuss how such reforms might transform their relationships with their students. Each participant should emerge with one or more concrete, feasible steps they can take to make their exams less “cold” for their students and themselves.
Make sure you RSVP with the CLSE and the hosting unit!
