Description
Are you interested in learning about evidence-based teaching strategies and activities that you can incorporate into your courses, often within minimal preparation or grading? In Small Teaching: Everyday Lessons from the Science of Learning, James Lang outlines research on strategies that support increased learning and provides activities that instructors can use to in their courses that are based on this research. Rather than requiring a complete course overhaul, many of these strategies can be incorporated with only minimal change in course design and teaching practice.

The Drake Institute for Teaching and Learning is partnering with institute affiliate Jane Hammons of University Libraries is organizing a review of journal articles related to themes from Small Teaching. The articles will provide insight into how educators from a variety of disciplines implemented small teaching strategies, the outcomes, and lessons learned. Participants can join any session and will receive 1-2 journal articles about a specific strategy in a weekly synchronous meeting via Zoom.

After this workshop participants will be able to:

  • Discuss evidence-based strategies that support increased student learning.
  • Identify sources of primary educational research literature.
  • Critique educational research journal articles.
