NIST Happy Hour! (with Deb Donovan). Forming groups to maximize learning in a large-enrollment undergraduate class
NIST Happy Hour! (with Deb Donovan). Forming groups to maximize learning in a large-enrollment undergraduate class
Description
Active learning pedagogies are increasingly being used in undergraduate science classes due to mounting evidence that active learning increases student achievement. These pedagogies require students to engage with science concepts through interactions with their instructor and their peers, and students often work together in small groups. How should groups be formed to maximize learning for all students? What are students’ attitudes about different types of groups? Today, I will share my research on group formation in a large-enrollment, non-majors biology course. In breakout rooms, we will share experiences grouping students in different educational contexts and discuss how context might affect our strategies for forming groups.

Reflection Prompts
Standard Required Prompts
This is a *required* reflection in order to get Bio5001 credit for workshop attendance. You can upload your reflection to the Workshop Reflection assignment on Carmen. Within your reflection, please include the event title, a short summary, and the reflection prompts.
- What did you learn?
- How does what you learn fit in to your prior knowledge?
- How will you incorporate what you learned into your teaching (including student hours, grading, recitation, etc.)?
Feel free to address these prompts in a way that is most applicable and useful for you. Some format options include: concept map, essay, or a new or revised assignment with notes justifying your changes.
