Description
** NOTE: You will need to register on the CIRTL website in order to sign up for this workshop (Go to: https://www.cirtl.net/ click sign up in the upper right corner, for institution choose Other). ** For many CIRTL workshops there are limited seats you need to enroll during a specific time-period for “regular registration” prior to the workshop. See details below. ** This is a two-part workshop - you must attend both parts - see details below. Get an introduction to qualitative research methods for classroom-based research in this two-part workshop. In the first session, participants will explore fundamental differences between qualitative orientations and more common research designs in STEM. Foundational (theoretical) knowledge that underlies much of qualitative research will be summarized so that students understand how and why qualitative research looks and feels different. Following this discussion, the advantages of using observation as a qualitative method will be explored, with special emphasis on understanding the difference between approaching an inquiry product from an inductive versus deductive reasoning approach and how the method of observation can add rigor when examining learning behaviors. In the second session, participants will hone in on what makes for effective qualitative research interviews. Interviewing is a common technique both inside the world of research and without. Whereas interviews are generally viewed as purposeful conversations, qualitative researchers use interviews to gather descriptive data and to document and discover interpretations of the world. Further, interviews in qualitative research are rarely used as a stand-alone strategy as they are often paired with observation and document analysis. This session will explore the distinguishing features of qualitative interviews, describe their use as primary and secondary data collection methods and engage participants in constructing interview questions for classroom-based research. Workshop Schedule This workshop has two online sessions, which participants are required to attend, at 3-4:30PM ET / 2-3:30PM CT / 1-2:30PM MT / 12-1:30PM PT on Monday, September 23 and September 30. Workload Participants will be expected to do some brief readings and reflections outside of workshop sessions. Registration & Enrollment This workshop is limited to 25 participants. Early registration for CIRTL members only is open from August 19 through September 13. Regular registration runs from September 14 through September 20. STEM/SBE grad students and postdocs from CIRTL institutions receive priority; we refer to the institution, role, and discipline in your website profile when assessing priority.
