Description
Contemplative pedagogies involve teaching methods designed to cultivate deepened awareness, concentration, and insight. Research suggests that contemplative pedagogy improves student capacity to meet learning outcomes, creates cognitive space for considering new and challenging viewpoints, reduces test-taking anxiety and stress, improves creativity and problem-solving, and builds empathy and community amongst students in the classroom.

In this workshop, participants will explore several methods to implement contemplative pedagogical practices in their classroom, including mindfulness and writing exercises. We will also pay special attention to how these practices and exercises are beneficial to minorized students, as research shows they are beneficial to creating inclusive spaces and supporting the learning of underserved student populations.

After this workshop participants will be able to:

  • Implement contemplative practices that improve student capacity to meet learning outcomes, considering new viewpoints, reduce test-taking anxiety, and build problem-solving skills and community amongst students in the classroom.
  • Articulate how contemplative practices and exercises are beneficial to minorized students.
