Description
Community-engaged teaching and service-learning are forms of experiential education characterized by student participation in an organized community-based activity that connects student academic learning to real-world community needs. In this workshop, we will introduce community-engaged teaching, explain its benefits, and explore the key characteristics of high-impact community-engaged teaching. Participants will have opportunities to discuss their motivation and ideas for creating a community-engaged course.
After this workshop, participants will be able to:
- define the concepts of community-engaged teaching and service-learning and their benefits as a pedagogical strategy
- describe the key characteristics of well-designed, ethical community-engaged and service-learning courses
- consider the various forms of community-engaged teaching and which is most appropriate for their context
