Multimedia learning resources - illustrations, animations, interactives - have become ubiquitous in undergraduate biology classrooms. We rely on them for teaching and engagement, while students seek them to support their learning. Despite their popularity and widespread use, much remains to be studied about how effectively these visual media support student learning. This presentation aims to help participants distinguish between different multimedia modalities and appreciate the unique pedagogical affordances of each. We will explore the process for how visualizations are made - from initial concept through design and production - and discuss strategies for selecting and deploying visual media
effectively in the life sciences classroom.
