Description
Compare “That’s OK. You didn’t do well, but biology isn’t your strength.” with “It is OK if you didn’t get it all right this time. The point is to grow your understanding. Let’s talk about what you can try next.” One of these conveys a fixed mindset and the other a growth mindset. Can you imagine that student learning and performance might be influenced differently by these two approaches? Thinking about this language is particularly important because research indicates the messages the instructor conveys can contribute to underperformance by Persons Excluded due to Ethnicity or Race (PEERs)
During this workshop, we will differentiate fixed and growth mindsets, review research findings associated with student success and instructor mindset, and explore ways that we can use growth mindset language in our everyday interactions with students.
