Description
Asking students to challenge preconceived notions, take a position, or support an argument with evidence makes them stronger critical thinkers. However, when that engagement requires them to move beyond their own experiences, the strong emotions can arise (which can also actually deepen learning). Participants will discuss inclusive principles can be used to best lead discussions on course content that may be challenging for students. Participants will leave with tools to assist in setting goals for discussions, articulating expectations, and anticipating conflicts in class. This session may be applied to completion of the requirements for a transcriptable Drake Institute Inclusive Teaching endorsement.
After this workshop participants will be able to:
- Plan for productive classroom discussion.
- Apply the Open the Front Door Framework as a way to moderate classroom discussion.
- Plan for controversial discussions by identifying the goals of discussion, articulating expectations, and anticipating conflicts likely to occur in your learning environment.
