See details below. ** This is a two-part workshop - you must attend both parts - see details below. Description How can unintentional or implicit bias impact classroom environments? Perhaps, more importantly, what are techniques and strategies STEM instructors can employ to have equitable and inclusive classrooms? This workshop is intended for future faculty at all levels, disciplines, and roles, and aims to teach participants about biases in STEM, as well as provide concrete tips for addressing bias and creating welcoming classroom environments. Although this workshop will heavily focus on gender bias, it also will describe how multiple identities can be negatively stereotyped in STEM. The workshop sessions will begin with a presentation on research from relevant publications in psychological and educational literature. During these presentations, participants will learn key terms such as “implicit bias”, “social identity-threat”, and “identity-safe cues.” Next, participants will take part in a moderated discussion, reflecting on how bias may impact their teaching and how different strategies could be employed in their classes. This workshop will also provide participants with access to a variety relevant resources including videos and articles. Participants are encouraged to attend both workshop sessions. Workshop Schedule This workshop has two online sessions, which participants are required to attend, at 12-1:30PM ET / 11AM-12:30PM CT / 10-11:30AM MT / 9-10:30AM PT on Tuesday, October 1 and 8. Workload Participants will be expected to read short articles, watch short videos, and complete brief surveys outside of sessions. Registration & Enrollment This workshop is limited to 40 participants. Early registration for CIRTL members only is open from August 19 through September 20. Regular registration runs from September 21 through September 27.
