Description
Join us every other week for CLSE Seminar Series for presentations of research in teaching and learning! This week Amy Kulesza will be talking about her research - Memory, Motivation and Making Connections: Long-term Outcomes Associated with Service Learning and Research Experiences. In this session, participants will learn about an ongoing study regarding changes in students who complete service learning projects and research projects in an Introductory Biology course. We added a service learning activity to an honors introductory biology class, which supported national efforts to educate a scientifically literate citizenry. In many service-learning models, students participate in extensive service-learning throughout the semester, with well-documented benefits.  Less attention has been paid to brief service-learning models such as ours, which involve <10 hours of service-learning per semester. Initially, we studied short-term (within semester) gains in motivation and scientific literacy comparing students with brief service learning (SL students) and students with brief research experiences (RP students), but detected few statistically significant differences.   We began investigating long-term differences between SL and RP students regarding their long-term involvement in - and perceptions of - service, research, and STEM learning. I will present a brief background of the development of the project, our initial research efforts, and then we will discuss the results from students surveyed 3 years post project.
