LEARNING GOALS Participants in this session will be able to: ** Explain the three pillars of universal design for learning (UDL). ** Brainstorm multiple means for designing assignments/activities. ** Explain the importance of accessibility, especially in online courses. ** Identify accessibility flags and remediation resources. This 90-minute workshop is an introduction to Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and accessibility. Instructional designers from ODEE will explain why these principles are so important at Ohio State, where we have a large and diverse student population. You'll be encouraged to reinvent the activities, assignments and delivery of your courses to improve the learning experience for all students and become aware of appropriate university resources to support you in this endeavor. What is UDL and accessibility? Universal Design for Learning (UDL) refers to principles and best practices for ensuring that all activities, assignments, outcomes and instruction are designed so that students have multiple ways to interact with content and be assessed on their learning. Accessibility, in the context we use it, refers to the practice of designing and utilizing technology and content so that students with vision, auditory, motor and cognitive disabilities can successfully navigate, use and benefit from them. Why does UDL and accessibility matter to you? Designing with UDL and accessibility in mind can improve outcomes for all students, and access is a key component of our mission as a university. In addition, lawsuits in higher education are pointing toward the need for a high level of urgency in designing and teaching with accessibility in mind. Where can you find more information?
