Description
Each semester, the eBird project gives Biology 1101 students the opportunity to engage in authentic research and communicate their work to a broader audience. This semester, students will present creative media artifacts—ranging from videos to infographics—that translate their eBird-based research questions, data, and conclusions for non-scientific audiences. As an instructor, we hope this showcase helps you (a) consider how to guide students in presenting their findings in accessible, audience-focused ways, (b) explore examples of research projects that move beyond the traditional laboratory format, and (c) reflect on how this experience supports national recommendations for inquiry-based biology education.
All are encouraged to attend, ask questions of the presenters, and put themselves in the shoes of the different non-scientific audiences.
For Bio5001 Participants to earn points, please plan to attend the showcase and interact with at least six presenters and submit a reflection paper for 4 BIO5001 TPD points. You must attend the entire showcase to receive full TPD Credit.
How this will work:

For Bio5001 Participants to earn points, please plan to attend the showcase and interact with at least six presenters and submit a reflection paper for 4 BIO5001 TPD points. You must attend the entire showcase to receive full TPD Credit.
How this will work:
- At the start of the showcase, look for Toacca Roberts to check in.
- Develop at least two thoughtful questions that you can ask presenters. These should reflect questions their designated non-scientific audience might ask and should prompt students to apply, analyze, or synthesize their work within a broader ecological or societal context.
- Interact with at least six presenters/artifacts (3 per session). You should aim to spend about 10 minutes with each presenter or group. Be curious, supportive, and engaging—your feedback helps students practice communicating science to public audiences!
- Lastly, complete the required reflection prompts and submit your reflection to the CLSE eBird Artifact Showcase Reflection Assignment on Carmen.
