Description
In Spring 2014, the CLSE implemented Peer-Led Team Learning (PLTL) due to concerns that introductory biology students were not benefitting optimally from their course experiences: upper division course pretests indicate our students do not retain important introductory concepts, our large courses typically address a broad range of concepts with limited student/instructor interaction, and students may lack confidence and feel disconnected. We thought PLTL would be an appropriate solution because its instructional approach is grounded in social constructivist theory and has been reported to improve STEM student retention and depth of learning. Our PLTL course is an elective accompaniment to Biology 1114. All students enrolled in Biology 1114 attend lecture and laboratory/recitation, and the self-selected PLTL participants additionally attend workshops in groups of 6-8 facilitated by a trained student peer leader. PLTL workshops are process- and content-rich, and implement active learning and metacognitive strategies to help students identify and correct conceptual errors or gaps, and to support student scientific literacy. This semester, PLTL has been expanded to both Biology 1113 and Biology 1114. Please join us to learn about the effects of PLTL on Biology 1114 students, experience PLTL activities and the workshop environment, and to discuss future avenues for PLTL and introductory biology students.
