Description
Dr. Paula Chambers, founder and CEO of the Versatile PhD (link available in Carmen Resources), will speak on Tuesday, October 4, 2016, on alternative careers for PhDs and how graduate students can mine their experiences for transferable skills that will help them get hired inside—but also outside the academy.
Dr. Chambers's "From Skills to Results: Describing Your PhD Skills to Non-Academic Employers" will describe her own bumpy journey from graduate student to grant writer to business owner. She'll talk about the current academic job market and demystify how to identify and articulate transferable skills. In the work shop graduate students will:
** Learn where the PhD career pipeline really goes
** Take inventory of the skills they've used in graduate school
** Identify concrete results they’ve achieved with those skills
** Learn how to describe those results in non-academic language
** Discover new career resources at Ohio State
