Description
Feeling unprepared when teaching a course or lesson outside your area of expertise? Intimidated by questions you can’t fully answer? You’re not alone! Teaching outside your expertise happens more often than you might expect, and it’s manageable with some intentional planning. This workshop provides practical strategies for navigating unfamiliar content with confidence and intention. Participants will learn how to efficiently sequence topics, respond effectively to challenging questions, and create a classroom environment that models curiosity and collaborative learning. By the end of the session, participants will feel more confident, implement strategies to teach beyond their expertise, and reflect on their practice to approach the unknown with curiosity.

Lunch will be provided.

After this workshop participants will be able to:

  • recognize and build upon current teaching skills while exploring new areas of expertise
  • describe techniques to respond to students’ questions about unfamiliar content
  • explore methods to organize course content in a meaningful way for students
  • develop alternatives to lecture-based instruction that cast the instructor in the role of guide or facilitator, as opposed to expert
