Description
Throughout our lives, we are exposed to millions of messages about the world around us - messages that shape our perceptions of people, places, concepts and ideas. As a result, all humans possess a range of implicit associations that operate unconsciously outside our awareness, and often times in conflict with our explicit beliefs. Using an engaging and participatory structure, this workshop equips attendees with a deeper understanding of our unconscious mental processing and the ways in which these implicit associations impact our decision-making. The latter part of the workshop addresses the role of implicit bias in graduate admission decisions. Key Learning Objectives: 1. Basic understanding of key elements of our social cognition (e.g. conscious and unconscious). 2. Ability to identify where and how implicit bias operates on an institutional level. 3. Cultivate individual and/or institution-specific strategies to mitigate the operation of implicit bias.
