Description

Description This workshop is intended for International Teaching Assistants who are getting ready to teach in the American classroom. The workshop will cover important actions ITAs can take before the semester begins and learn about expectations of American undergraduate students in order to more effectively interact with students. Cross-sharing of cultural norms and expectations from participants’ home countries will provide reflective opportunities to determine how best to interact with American undergraduate students. Workshop Schedule This workshop has one online session, which participants are required to attend, at 2-3:30PM ET / 1-2:30PM CT 12-1:30PM MT / 11AM-12:30PM PT on Wednesday, October 3. Workload Participants will be asked to answer a few brief questions online before the workshop takes place. Registration & Enrollment This workshop is limited to 40 participants. Early registration for CIRTL members only is open from Monday, August 20 through 12PM CT on Friday, September 14. Regular registration runs from Monday, September 17 through 12PM CT on Friday, September 28. STEM/SBE grad students and postdocs from CIRTL institutions receive priority; we refer to the institution, role, and discipline in your website profile when assessing priority. Learning Outcomes Associate: Evidence-Based Teaching Describe several known high-impact, evidence-based effective instructional practices and materials and recognize their alignment with particular types of learning goals. Associate: Learning Community Describe several techniques for creating a LC within a learning environment, including strategies that promote positive interdependence between learners so as to accomplish learning goals. Associate: Learning-through-Diversity Describe how an instructor’s beliefs and biases can influence student learning.
