Description
Academic Mentorship: Breaking the Cycle  by Dr James Cray

Workshop Description: This workshop seeks to examine the pillars behind effective mentorship that may allow us to “break the cycle” that result in trainees’ experiences of lack of support to achieve their aspirational goals. The basic tenets of Communication, Expectations, the Responsibility of a Role Model, and Commitment will all be considered with provision of targeted instruments that may improve the tools necessary for an improved mentor-mentee relationship.

About the Presenter: James Cray is as an Associate Professor in the Department of Biomedical Education and Anatomy within the Division of Anatomy at The Ohio State University College of Medicine, with a courtesy appointment in Biosciences at the College of Dentistry. In his role, Dr. Cray is the Director of Graduate Education for the Division of Anatomy, constituting approximately forty-five MS and PhD students and acts as Co-Director of Anatomy Dental Education. Dr. Cray teaches in the Medical, Dental, Graduate, and Undergraduate Anatomy curricula here at Ohio State. Dr. Cray also maintains an active research program focused on craniofacial development and environmental exposures that cause birth defects and has received funding from the NIH, NSF, and VA for these efforts. Dr. Cray has mentored over 50 trainees at various professional levels in his academic career and was one of the 2023 Ohio State University Graduate Faculty Mentor Awardees.
